West to a Land of Plenty: The Diary of Teresa Angelino Viscardi
204 pages · First published 1998
Fourteen-year-old Teresa Angelino Viscardi leaves New York with her Italian immigrant family in 1883 to travel west toward Idaho Territory. Her fictional diary records train and wagon travel, unfamiliar landscapes, family disagreements, prejudice, and the practical demands of starting over in a place very different from the city. Teresa’s perspective also highlights the tension between preserving an immigrant family’s culture and adapting to new American surroundings. Jim Murphy’s Dear America novel uses a young diarist to introduce westward migration from the less commonly represented viewpoint of an Italian American family.
