Watership Down

by Richard Adams

Book 1 of the Watership Down series

478 pages · First published 1972

Fiver, a small rabbit with an unusual gift for sensing danger, becomes convinced that the Sandleford warren will soon be destroyed. His brother Hazel believes him and leads a small band of rabbits away in search of a safe home, beginning a journey through predators, hostile warrens, roads, and unfamiliar territory. The group eventually finds Watership Down but must solve the problem of creating a viable community rather than merely surviving. Richard Adams’s novel combines animal adventure, invented mythology, leadership, and political allegory in an epic about refugees building a society without reproducing the dangers they escaped.
