Under the Greenwood Tree

by Thomas Hardy

In the village of Mellstock, a traditional church musicians' choir faces displacement when the new vicar introduces a modern organ and its young schoolmistress, Fancy Day. Quiet tranter's son Dick Dewy falls in love with Fancy, but their courtship must survive competing suitors, family expectations, and her own uncertainty. The changing music of the church becomes a gentle symbol for customs yielding to a new generation. Pastoral, humorous, and much lighter than Hardy's major tragedies, this short novel is a lovely spring or Christmas-season read for anyone who wants village festivities, woodland atmosphere, old songs, and a courtship ending in hope.
