The Winter's Tale
306 pages · First published 1623
King Leontes of Sicilia becomes consumed by the baseless belief that his pregnant wife Hermione has been unfaithful with his friend Polixenes. His jealousy destroys his family and sends the infant Perdita away, where she is raised by shepherds without knowing her royal identity. Years later, romance and coincidence begin drawing the separated generations back together. Shakespeare’s late romance moves from psychological tragedy toward pastoral comedy and reconciliation, combining jealousy, lost children, improbable recognition, and one of the theater’s most famous stage directions.
