The Winter of Red Snow: The Revolutionary War Diary of Abigail Jane Stewart, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, 1777
173 pages · First published 1996
Eleven-year-old Abigail Jane Stewart lives near Valley Forge during the brutal winter of 1777–78, when George Washington’s Continental Army camps nearby. Her diary records shortages, snow, illness, wounded soldiers, and the ways local families are drawn into supporting an army struggling simply to survive. Revolutionary ideals are experienced through cold rooms and scarce food rather than speeches alone. Kristiana Gregory’s Dear America novel uses a fictional girl’s journal to show the famous Valley Forge winter from the domestic perspective of civilians living beside the encampment.
