The Story of Ferdinand

by Munro Leaf

72 pages · First published 1936

Ferdinand is a young Spanish bull who prefers sitting quietly under a cork tree and smelling flowers to running, jumping, and fighting with the other bulls. An accidental bee sting makes visiting bullfighters mistake his sudden wild behavior for ferocity, and he is chosen for the bullring in Madrid. Once there, Ferdinand refuses to perform and simply enjoys the flowers worn by spectators. Munro Leaf and illustrator Robert Lawson created a deceptively simple picture book about gentleness, individuality, and the freedom to remain yourself when everyone expects a different kind of strength.
