The Story of Babar

by Jean de Brunhoff

Book 1 of the Babar series

48 pages · First published 1931

Babar is a young elephant whose mother is killed by a hunter, sending him away from the forest and into a city. There he befriends an Old Lady, learns human customs, dresses in fine clothes, and eventually returns to the elephants with experiences that distinguish him from the others. He becomes king and begins a new life with Celeste. Jean de Brunhoff’s influential picture book is imaginative and visually charming, but modern readers may also notice the colonial assumptions embedded in its contrast between European-style “civilization” and Babar’s original home.
