The Screwtape Letters

by C.S. Lewis

Book 1 of the Screwtape series

222 pages · First published 1942

A senior demon named Screwtape writes a series of letters advising his inexperienced nephew Wormwood on how to tempt a human being away from God. Everyday annoyances, pride, romance, war, churchgoing, and self-deception become tools in a spiritual campaign whose success depends on keeping the patient from recognizing what is happening. Because the story is told from the demons’ perspective, virtues appear dangerous and destructive while selfishness is praised as useful strategy. C. S. Lewis uses satire, theology, and inverted moral logic to examine temptation and Christian discipleship by asking readers to see familiar habits from the enemy’s point of view.
