The Reptile Room

by Lemony Snicket

Book 2 of the A Series of Unfortunate Events series

192 pages · First published 1999

The Baudelaire orphans are sent to live with Dr. Montgomery Montgomery, a kindly herpetologist whose enormous collection of reptiles makes his house seem like the first safe place they have found since their parents’ death. Their relief ends when Count Olaf reappears in disguise, determined once again to seize their inheritance. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny recognize him immediately, but convincing the adults around them is another matter. Lemony Snicket’s second Series of Unfortunate Events novel mixes absurd humor, danger, wordplay, and a genuinely sinister villain in a story where even a room full of snakes is less threatening than one determined relative.
