The Prisoner of Zenda
Book 2 of the The Ruritania Trilogy series
140 pages · First published 1894
English gentleman Rudolf Rassendyll visits the fictional kingdom of Ruritania and discovers that his resemblance to the new king is more than a curiosity. When the king is drugged before his coronation, loyal supporters persuade Rudolf to impersonate him temporarily to prevent the throne from falling to the king’s ambitious half brother. The deception becomes much more dangerous after the real monarch is kidnapped and held at the castle of Zenda, while Rudolf falls in love with Princess Flavia, the woman expected to marry the king he is pretending to be. Anthony Hope’s classic adventure combines swordplay, political intrigue, mistaken identity, and impossible romance in one of the defining examples of the Ruritanian genre.
