The Journal of Finn Reardon: A Newsie, New York City, 1899
160 pages · First published 2003
Thirteen-year-old Finn Reardon sells newspapers on the streets of New York City in 1899, helping support his working-class family while publishers depend on boys like him to move the daily press. When newspaper companies raise the price newsies must pay for their papers, Finn and other boys organize a strike against powerful men such as Joseph Pulitzer. His diary records street life, family pressures, friendships, and the risks of standing together. Susan Campbell Bartoletti’s My Name Is America novel uses a fictional first-person journal to introduce young readers to the real Newsboys’ Strike of 1899 and the children whose labor helped drive the city’s newspapers.
