The Healing of Natalie Curtis
After a breakdown prevents her anticipated New York Philharmonic debut, classically trained musician Natalie Curtis spends years unable to recover her former joy in music. A 1902 journey west with her brother introduces her to Indigenous songs, dances, and stories that federal assimilation policies have attempted to suppress. Natalie seeks permission to document this music and eventually uses her connections, including access to President Theodore Roosevelt, to challenge restrictions on Native cultural expression. Based on a real ethnomusicologist's life, this novel suits readers who enjoy arts history, women researchers, western travel, recovery narratives, and ethically complex stories about preservation, advocacy, and cultural ownership.
