Paradise Lost

by John Milton

453 pages · First published 1667

Satan and other rebel angels are cast out of Heaven after challenging God’s authority, and Satan turns toward the newly created human world in search of revenge. In Eden, Adam and Eve live in innocence until temptation introduces disobedience, shame, and mortality. John Milton expands the biblical Genesis story into an epic concerned with free will, pride, obedience, justice, and the nature of heroic action. Paradise Lost is dense seventeenth-century blank verse rather than conventional narrative fiction, but its imaginative treatment of Satan, Eden, and the Fall has profoundly influenced later literature.
