Out of the Silent Planet
Book 1 of the The Space Trilogy series
160 pages · First published 1938
Cambridge philologist Elwin Ransom is kidnapped by the physicist Weston and businessman Devine and carried aboard a spacecraft to Malacandra, the planet humans call Mars. Expecting to be sacrificed to alien creatures, Ransom escapes and discovers several intelligent species living within a spiritual order radically different from Earth’s. His growing understanding of Malacandra exposes the arrogance behind Weston’s vision of human expansion. The first Space Trilogy novel combines planetary adventure, linguistics, Christian cosmology, and a critique of imperialism as Ransom discovers that humanity may be the spiritually isolated species rather than the civilized one.
