Oliver Twist

by Charles Dickens

608 pages · First published 1838

Orphaned Oliver Twist grows up under England’s brutal Poor Law system before escaping an apprenticeship and making his way to London. There he falls into the orbit of Fagin, the Artful Dodger, Bill Sikes, and a group of children trained to steal. Oliver’s innocence repeatedly places him at risk while mysteries surrounding his parentage connect the criminal underworld to more respectable society. Charles Dickens combines melodrama, satire, crime, and social criticism in a novel attacking institutional cruelty and the assumption that poverty is evidence of moral failure.
