Little House on the Prairie
Book 3 of the Little House series
335 pages · First published 1935
The Ingalls family leaves Wisconsin for Indian Territory, traveling by covered wagon to build a home on the Kansas prairie. Laura experiences river crossings, prairie fires, wolves, illness, and encounters with Osage people while Pa and Ma try to establish a farm far from settled communities. The family eventually learns that their claim lies on land not legally open to white settlement. The third Little House book presents frontier movement through a child’s perspective while also reflecting nineteenth-century settler assumptions that modern readers may want to place in historical context.
