Ivanhoe
496 pages · First published 1819
Disinherited Saxon knight Wilfred of Ivanhoe returns to England during the reign of Richard the Lionheart and finds his country divided by Norman-Saxon hostility, political intrigue, and religious prejudice. Tournaments and castle sieges draw Ivanhoe, Lady Rowena, the Jewish healer Rebecca, Robin Hood, and the disguised King Richard into overlapping conflicts. Rebecca’s courage and persecution give the novel one of its most memorable moral centers even as the romantic plot follows Ivanhoe’s loyalty to Rowena. Walter Scott’s 1819 historical romance helped shape popular images of medieval chivalry while confronting divided loyalties in a kingdom struggling over power and identity.
