Crime and Punishment

by Fyodor Dostoevsky

671 pages · First published 1866

Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished former student in St. Petersburg, convinces himself that an extraordinary person may be justified in committing a crime for a supposedly higher purpose. After murdering a pawnbroker, he discovers that philosophical arguments cannot insulate him from fear, guilt, and the pressure of investigation. His encounters with the compassionate Sonya and the perceptive investigator Porfiry force him to confront motives he barely understands himself. Fyodor Dostoevsky’s psychological novel explores crime less as a puzzle than as a spiritual and moral crisis unfolding inside the mind of the person who committed it.
