Brave New World

by Aldous Huxley

288 pages · First published 1932

In the World State, citizens are engineered before birth, conditioned for predetermined social roles, and kept content through consumption, casual pleasure, and the drug soma. Bernard Marx feels uneasy within this supposedly perfect system and becomes fascinated by John, a man raised outside it with ideas shaped by Shakespeare, suffering, family, and individual choice. Bringing John into London turns him into both a celebrity and a challenge to the society’s assumptions about happiness. Aldous Huxley’s dystopian novel examines freedom, technology, conformity, and the price of eliminating pain when doing so also eliminates much of what makes human life meaningful.
