Blueberries for Sal

by Robert McCloskey

56 pages · First published 1948

Little Sal and her mother go to Blueberry Hill to gather berries for winter, while a mother bear and her cub arrive on the other side of the hill to eat as many berries as they can. Sal and the cub both wander away, and each eventually begins following the wrong mother. The parallel story creates gentle suspense without making the wilderness frightening. Robert McCloskey’s Caldecott Honor picture book uses rhythmic sounds, expressive illustrations, and mirrored parent-child relationships to celebrate family, foraging, and a very manageable case of mistaken identity.
