His royal blood makes him politically useful but socially inconvenient, so King Shrewd secretly trains him as an assassin while others teach him the court’s telepathic magic called the Skill. Fitz also possesses the forbidden Wit, an ability to bond with animals that could destroy him if discovered. The first Farseer novel follows a lonely boy becoming an instrument of the crown while trying to preserve enough of himself to decide what loyalty means.
