Across the Wide and Lonesome Prairie: The Oregon Trail Diary of Hattie Campbell
140 pages · First published 1997
Thirteen-year-old Hattie Campbell leaves Missouri with her family in 1847 and joins a wagon train bound for Oregon. Her diary records river crossings, illness, accidents, friendships, buffalo, exhaustion, and the enormous distances that make the trail both exciting and frightening. Hattie’s initial enthusiasm is tempered by the losses and responsibilities of overland migration. Kristiana Gregory’s Dear America novel uses a fictional journal to present the Oregon Trail through a young girl’s daily experience, balancing the promise of the West with the physical and emotional cost of reaching it.
